Blind to The Gathering Storm: Obama Joked at Trump as Baghdad Fell

Wed, 04 May 2016

The White House Correspondents Dinner is one of those bizarre Washington rituals of narcissistic self-congratulation between corrupt, incompetent politicians who don’t have a clue and their fawning courtiers called White House correspondents and senior editors who take their preening pretensions seriously.

So it was no surprise that President Barack Obama on Saturday night, April 30 used the 2016 dinner as an occasion to insult Republican front-running candidate Donald Trump to predictable applause, ridiculing Trump’s claim to any foreign policy expertize.

Obama had either forgotten, or more likely just did not care that a mob of supporters of Shiite firebrand leader Moqtada al-Sadr and his Saraya-al-Salam, or Peace Brigades, had stormed the long-sacrosanct Green Zone in the heart of Baghdad to briefly seize control of the Iraqi parliament earlier on Saturday.

This humiliation of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, Obama’s straw man in Iraq, came only two days after Vice President Joe Biden briefly jetted into Baghdad on Thursday under the illusion that he could his promises and force of personality could actually do some political good to Abadi and help prop him up.

The storming of parliament however sent a very different message: Abadi is now a hollow shell propped up by a handful of US advisers and all Iraqis know it.

They also know that Obama is fearful of recommitting major US forces yet again to Iraq to try and prop up the unworkable political system that President George W. Bush, and his team of Condoleezza Rice, Donald Wolfowitz, Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz cooked up 13 years ago.

We have previously predicted in these columns the rise of Sadr towards the supreme power he has always coveted, back by Iran. Keep watching.

As for Obama’s heavy-handed jokes, self-congratulation and appalling timing at his Washington party he will likely be remembered as more oblivious to the crisis in Baghdad than the Babylonian King Belshazzar was in the Biblical Book of Daniel to the famous Writing on the Wall.

The true meaning of that crisis is explained in my 2015 book Gathering Storm – Available on this web site.
